"If educators invested a fraction of the energy they now spend on trying to transmit information in trying to stimulate the students' enjoyment of learning, we could achieve much better results."
Csikszentmihalyi

It's important that we all understand that the chief impediments to learning are not cognitive; it's not that any of our students can't learn; it's that many of them don't want to. One of our major challenges is to switch on what is currently switching off so many of our young people.

All ideas welcome.

Hi Chris,
I liked your blog entry regarding swithing young people on to learning. Could it be that we do not give them enough respect inschool, could it be that we don't understand 'their world' or respect their world. Educators have an enormous challenge to switch kids on but they would be much more successful if they down to the kids world more often. I am amazed at what I see in Leeds every time I visit- kids and schools achieving and even though there are so many social isssues to deal with in society- I wish all parents were 'real parents' to their kids.

Hi John, I agree that we need to get parents and carers and engage them more effectively in the learning process. We also need to connect with young people more powerfully, listen more, target more effectively and do more for the young people who need us most.
